Arbuckle Mountains, Land and History

The unique geology, biogeography, and history of the Arbuckle Mountains south of Norman has long held the interest of scholars in the region. On this field trip, we will explore why this area has been a fertile area for research. First, we will visit the Blue River Wildlife Management Area to visit a disjunct population of the seaside alder (Alnus maritima) and discuss the ecology of the cross timbers, the predominant vegetation type in the Arbuckles. Next, we will visit the historic Chickasaw Council House and Museum in Tishomingo and break for lunch. From there, we will travel to the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, after which we will return to Norman. The cost will include all travel, acitivities, and lunch.
