Term Modeling Project
For
the term modeling project we are going to analyze and discuss the processes of
deer population. We are going to use
the modeling program STELLA. We found
our idea with the help of the World Wide Web.
We wanted to find a model that dealt with population. But we decided that we wanted to focus, not
on human population, but rather on a type of animal population. With this in mind, we were able to find a
model that fit this description, the deer population
model.
Now
we are going to give a moderate explanation of the deer population model in
which we are going to recreate in STELLA.
High school biology students at North East High School created this
model. The students set up a model with
one stock being deer population and two flows, birth being the input, and
deaths being the output. Connected to
the births is the birth rate, and connected to the deaths is the food supply,
which is also connected to the deer density.
Square miles are then connected to the deer density, which is affected
by the deer population.
We
are going to recreate this model and then we are also going to produce graphs
and other numerical models to help us analyze our data. We want to be able to see the effects of the
increase/decrease of the following components:
birth rate and food supply. We
are planning to download another STELLA model or use the one provided in class
to produce this deer population model and graphs.
