Prelab 9: Plate Tectonics and Locating an EarthquakeThe lab assignment this week consists of two different parts; one you will complete in lab and the other you will do as an internet exercise. Part 2: Locating an earthquakeThe second part of the lab consists of an internet exercise that you will do on your own time. The in-class portion of the lab lasts only about an hour, so this internet exercise will "count" as the remaining portion of the lab. The printed "certificate" you receive upon completing the exercise is what you will turn in at the beginning of the next lab period (that is the lab AFTER the plate tectonic and earthquake lab). If you are having any trouble with access to the web site or completing the internet exercise contact your lab TA or Dr. Soreghan . Procedure for the locating an earthquake exercise:1. You will need to find a computer with a connection to the Internet AND A PRINTER. Any one of the campus computer facilities will work. For a list of available campus computers with printers (on-campus computer facilities) 2. Use whatever browser program is available on the computer, such as Netscape or MS Internet Explorer to access the following site: http://www.sciencecourseware.com/VirtualEarthquake 3. The page will load into a new browser page. 4. When the new page loads, read through the introductory material and then click on the "Execute Virtual Earthquake" button at the bottom of the page. 5. Read through the introductory material (take notes!) and then choose ONE of the four locations of earthquakes, and work through the exercise until you complete it. If you make a mistake, or are sloppy in your calculations, the computer will require you to recalculate your answers before continuing. 6. Once you have correctly identified the location of the earthquake, and the magnitude of the earthquake, the computer will allow you to type your name into a form and print out a "certificate." YOU MUST DO THIS TO RECEIVE CREDIT! |
