Welcome!

We are excited about your interest in pursuing a major in the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences.  We would like to take this opportunity to provide you with information to help you excel in these degree programs over the next four years.

If you are interested in pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Geography or a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology, it is vital that you master Math in order to do well in the required major courses, as well as additional requirements in Physics, Chemistry, Engineering, and Computer Science.  To earn a Bachelor of Science degree within four years, you should be prepared to complete MATH 1823 (Calculus I) and MATH 2423 (Calculus II) by the end of your freshman year, and MATH 2433 (Calculus III) and MATH 2443 (Calculus IV) by the end of your sophomore year.

The Bachelor of Arts in Geography requires advanced competency in a foreign language.  This degree requires the completion of at least two intermediate (sophomore level) courses in a foreign language.  For many students, this will mean completing the two beginning (freshman level) foreign language courses as well.  Foreign language courses completed at the high school level will not fulfill this requirement.

A career in Geography or Meteorology is exciting and challenging. That career will begin when you start your studies at OU this semester.  To graduate within four years with any of our degree programs, you will need to complete at least 32 academic credit hours per year, or roughly five courses per semester.  Requirements for our degree programs are demanding and structured (i.e., some courses are only offered once a year), so you should prepare yourself for rigorous study.

If you have questions concerning the degree programs offered through the College of Atmospheric & Geographic Sciences, please do not hesitate to contact Assistant Dean Pamela Neal or Academic Counselor Mary Anne Hempe in the A&GS Student Services Center at (405) 325-3101.  We look forward to working with you as you pursue your degree.

Sincerely,
Sig
Dr. John T. Snow, Dean
