Advising

University Information

The University of Oklahoma has twelve undergraduate degree-granting units: Academic Affairs, Architecture, Arts & Sciences, Business, College of Continuing Education, Earth & Energy, Education, Engineering, Journalism, Fine Arts, Liberal Studies, and the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences (A&GS), which contains the Department of Geography and the School of Meteorology.

In addition to the requirements you met to be admitted to OU, you must also meet requirements for admission to A&GS. These requirements are:

Successful completion of at least 24 semester credit hours of college credit
A minimum 2.00 retention grade point average
A declared major in either Geography or Meteorology

Until the above requirements are met, you will be a student in University College, which is not a degree-granting college. Incoming transfer students who meet the admission requirements listed above will be directly admitted to the College of Atmospheric & Geographic Sciences.

College Advising

You will be advised in University College through the spring semester of your freshman year. After the successful completion of your freshman year, your academic records will be transferred to the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences, provided you meet the requirements listed above.

Once you are fully admitted to A&GS, you will be assigned a faculty advisor for semester-to-semester advising. The College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences believes that faculty members are best qualified to provide curricular, professional and career advisement. All students are advised prior to enrollment each semester. You will receive an e-mail during your first semester in A&GS informing you of your faculty advisor. Please note that advising in the College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences is mandatory. Your faculty advisor will advise you into appropriate classes for the upcoming semester, lift your advising flag and provide any Electronic Special Permissions (ESPs) you might need to enroll in specific classes.

Before each enrollment period, review your academic record on Degree Navigator (degree.ou.edu) to determine which courses you plan to take in the upcoming academic term. Then schedule an appointment with your faculty advisor and prepare a trial schedule at enroll.ou.edu before your meeting. The College of Atmospheric and Geographic Sciences uses online record keeping through Degree Navigator, so you will not need to pick up a paper file before your appointment.

Advisor Responsibilities

You may expect the advising staff in the A&GS Academic Dean’s Office to:

Work with you to establish realistic goals and objectives.
Encourage you to be responsible for your own academic progress and to realize your full potential as a student at the University of Oklahoma.
Understand and communicate the A&GS curriculum, graduation requirements, and University of Oklahoma policy and procedures.
Help you monitor your progress toward graduation.
Notify you of any graduation deficiencies at least one semester prior to your projected graduation date.
Be accessible for meetings by appointment.
Promptly respond to your e-mails and telephone calls.
Assist you with filling out forms (e.g., veteran’s, study abroad, ROTC four-year plan, etc.).
Provide you with information about campus resources and services.
Assist you with problems of an academic nature.
Make referrals to resources within and out of the College when needed.
Maintain confidentiality concerning your academic records.
Respect your opinions and beliefs.

Student Responsibilities

As a student, we expect you to:

Be responsible for your decisions and actions.
Become familiar with Degree Navigator (degree.ou.edu), the University’s online system that monitors progress toward the completion of your degree.
Learn the requirements for your degree by reading the A&GS section of the OU General Catalog.
Become knowledgeable about University policy and procedures that affect you (e.g. drop & add deadlines, enrollment, financial aid).
Set a target graduation date and develop a semester-to-semester plan to complete your degree by that date.
Read “Monday Memo” every week to stay up-to-date on College events and opportunities.
Meet with your faculty advisor every semester.
Refrain from seeking academic advice from friends or classmates.
Schedule a degree check in the Academic Dean’s Office (Sarkeys Energy Center, Suite 710) the first semester of your junior year.
Save a copy of every paper or major assignment; also save all official University documents (receipts, memos, etc.) until you are cleared for graduation.
Contact the Academic Dean’s Office with ANY academic problem or question you have concerning your degree or OU.
