The motivation of the foundation of the International Society of Biometeorology (ISB) was to bring together scientists from around the world who are working in the field of Biometeorology to exchange information and ideas. The ISB was founded on August 29, 1956, at the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, France. The foundation was initiated by the geologist Dr. S.W. Tromp (The Netherlands) and the meteorologist Dr. H. Ungeheuer (Germany) and several human physiologists of which Dr. F. Sargent II (USA) became the first President.

Fifty years ago, when the Society was founded, scientists who are interested in environmental and ecological problems were rather isolated. The ISB provided a framework for the exchange of information that was essential to the survival of the discipline. Today, the ISB continues to facilitate the cooperation of scientists throughout the world as they continue to explore biometeorological problems.

The general objectives of the ISB are:

  • the development of biometeorology
  • the dissemination of knowledge relevant to the relation between meteorological factors, physico-chemical systems and living organisms
  • the exchange of current information on the physical environment of plants, animals and humans, between ISB members (from some 100 disciplines)
